This was to be our view from the campsite in Neustift in the Austrian Tirol however the space we had occupied was “reserved” with all the other empty spaces. So we are now in Telfes. The campsite owner kindly fitted us in even though he is fully booked. We have booked tomorrow’s campsite to be safe.
Lots of paragliding in this area. View from new campsite.
Lots of alpine houses, ski lifts and a small local train (electric) that serves the villages.
Went to restaurant Bel Ami for dinner in Fulmpes, the neighbouring village. Chose traditional Austrian food, pork schnitzel and schnitzel cordon bleu. Delicious but huge portions (and probably off the scale for Cholesterol!).
It has been a surprise travelling across Europe how many cattle are reared indoors with pasture solely used for silage rather than grazing. This is particularly common in the Netherlands although public opinion over animal welfare is changing farmers behaviour albeit slowly. Here in the Tyrol (and in southern Germany) summer grazing is a tradition that still adhered to so it is nice to see cattle grazing free range.
Inevitably it is very different travelling overland in Europe compared to Africa. Africa is often raw and untamed. In contrast wild camping is illegal in Austria. And I miss the chance encounters with local people. Perhaps when we venture further it will be different.
Saturday 28th June 2025 – travelled through a bit of Italy and back to Austria today. Some stunning mountain landscapes on the way. Camping at Berg im Drautal in the Draval valley near Lienz. The plan is to go to Slovenia tomorrow.
Received an emergency alert on the phone this evening (bright red message with siren warning!). According to google translate:
Major fire at the Rossbacher company in Nussdorf-Debant with heavy smoke development. Close all windows, doors, and skylights. Follow the instructions of the authorities and emergency services. https://warnung.tirol.cv.at/w /Brandereignis-Nussdorf-Debant .html. Avoid the area immediately surrounding the incident. Turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems in the vicinity of the incident.
It is apparently 30 kilometres away so doesn’t represent a risk to us. Rachel had commented about the smoke!
